Christmas With Your Friends!

Welcome to the Christmas edition of getting to know your friends. (Thanks Aimee!) Okay, here's what you're supposed to do, & try not to be a SCROOGE! Copy this entire post & paste onto your own new post! Change all the answers so they apply to you. Then tag a bunch of people you know....Tis the Season to be NICE!

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Wrapping paper!! And not just throwing it together! Oh no, it must be good paper so that you can get a perfect crease... and then top it with ribbon tied just right! Aaaah, you guessed it! I am so incredibly OCD when it comes to wrapping gifts. I know you are saying that no one cares and they will only tear it off, but that doesn't stop me! I can't help it! There is nothing like beautifully wrapped gifts.

2. Real tree or Artificial? I am an artificial girl! I would love to do a real tree, actually! I think I am just scared I would kill it 2 weeks before Christmas! (I have never claimed to have a green thumb) We never had real trees growing up and I have no idea how to maintain one of those suckers!! Also, I won't lie that having one pre-lit saves me a lot of grief!!

3. When do you put up the tree? I try to get it done the day after Thanksgiving. When all the other suckers in the world are braving the stampedes at the stores, I am chillin in the comfort of my home, hanging ornaments...

4. When do you take the tree down?
Usually sometime the first week in January. I am not one to leave it up too long. The outdoor lights are a different story... Since I vote myself out of that job, I won't complain when it happens as long as it is before Mother's Day. Lol. Actually, I think this is the 2nd time we have ever done lights outside!! Thanks to Dylan for begging!!

5. Do you like Egg Nog? Gag, gag! NOOOOOO!

6. Favorite gift received as a child? My mom made us Pound Puppies one year. We knew we were getting them, because she couldn't hide her craftiness... they took too long. I wish I still had it... Just to prove that my mom has actually sewn in her lifetime.

7. Hardest person to buy for? Parents. I swear. They all have everything, and the stuff that I think would be beneficial for them, they don't share the same opinion... I have given up and just try to give updated pics of my kids every year. I know. I am pathetic.

8. Easiest person to buy for? Dylan. This year, all he wants is a jack-in-the-box and a sling to carry his arrows. He is so funny!

9. Do you have a nativity scene? I am still searching for one that is not tacky...

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? this is assuming that I am on top of it enough to send anything in the first place...

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? My Great Grandma used to give us HUGE granny panties every year!!! Oh, how we dreaded getting those... bless her heart... oh, how I miss them now. Funny how the things you despised are the things you miss the most. Funny little Gram.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? #1: Elf. Who doesn't like this movie?? Hilarious. #2: Christmas Story (Aimee, I am dying that you haven't seen this!!)

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Oh, you know... maybe next week?? Uh, when I get around to it...
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? No, but sometimes I give Dylan presents he got for his birthday that I put away. He gets so many and forgets about some, so they make a new appearance at Christmas or as someone else's birthday gift... I know. That is horrible!

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Sausage Rolls and Fin and Hatti... I don't even know if I spelled that right. It is smoked cod. I know you are probably sicked out right now, but it is really good and its one of those OLD family traditions...

16. Lights on the tree? Yep!! Pre-lit, Baby

17. Favorite Christmas song? Bare Naked Ladies and Sarah McLaughlin God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Travel everywhere possible with in the Salt Lake Valley. I wish we could stay home!! We did last year, cuz everyone left town but us! IT WAS HEAVEN!!

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen.... And RUDOLPH!
20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Neither. I have a bunch of flowers and twigs and crap up there... slightly more nontraditional.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas morning!! That's the point, isn't it??
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? People who are stingy. I used to work at ZCMI. They used to do the Angel Tree there. (I don't know if they still do now that it has been so many other stores) At any rate, I used to try to help them generate a little business for the tree when I was slow at my counter. You would not believe most of the people!! They would be walking around with over a thousand dollars of merchandise just purchased and they would tell me they didn't have the money to do it!! What the EFF?? Most of those people only needed like $15-$20. BAH!!! SCROOGES!! #2 most annoying thing is people who go way overboard with tacky lights and decor outside. Come on, people!!! There is a tasteful way to go about this and make your home look beautiful!!
23. Favorite ornament theme or color? What I have right now is not my favorite (red and gold), but since I spent so freaking much on my tree when this was my favorite, it is going to stay for a couple more years!! I really want to do a turquoise tree.
24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? We don't really have a huge tradition for Christmas dinner. Breakfast is more our thing... We do like to have clam chowder on Christmas Eve.

25. What do you want for Christmas this year? I would like a live in "do all the shiz that I hate" person. Is there such a thing?? Some one who will do laundry, clean toilets, do dishes, and homework with the kids with out expecting a massive paycheck?? I don't want the basic, I want the super deluxe Model (you know, the one that does baseboards, dusting and windows as well!)!!
...been an awful good girl, Santa Baby! So, hurry down the chimney tonight!!!! (this is what I posted on Tiff's blog. I went back and did a little copy/paste action...)

TAG: Jessie, Michelle, Erin, Kallie, and Ashlii (and anyone else who feels so inclined...)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

THANKSGIVING!!!

So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, which is my 2nd favorite holiday, I have decided to write a post on 5 things I am grateful for! I am thinking outside the box of the normal God, family, and friends. Although I am not listing those, I hope you all know that I am still grateful...

1. I am so very thankful for the opportunity that we are all given to learn and grow everyday. I hope that I am living up to the potential I have to stretch myself and to be a better person. My sole wish is to be a blessing to others. I hope that I can touch lives, impact others, and to be an encourager and give hope, especially when so much of the world is negative these days.

2. I am thankful for my individuality. I am so very glad that God has given me the gift to be who I am. Not only that, but he has given me the ability to not care too much what others think of me. I believe that this has allowed me to think outside the box and reach to a higher level. When we are truly comfortable with who we are, God can use us in amazing ways. If we are trying to hide and be someone we are not, we will never be able to find out what he really has in store for us!

3. I am thankful that I am compassionate. I love the fact that I cry at the smallest of things. It reminds me that I have a huge heart to love on and serve my fellow men.

4. I am so very grateful that I have the opportunity to everyday hear my children laugh. That is another thing that can make me cry so easily. I hope that I never take these small things for granted. It is so wonderful that I don't have to miss these little things anymore because of having to work.

5. I am so very thankful for my husband who is a warrior and a champion. Everyday he goes out and fights for our family and makes decisions with the long term in mind. He is reminding us to sacrifice the good for the great. I feel so fortunate to be his helpmate and companion in life. I love to watch him grow and develop, and everyday he becomes better!! I think that I am married to the most amazing man on the planet!! I hope that all of my beautiful friends fell the same way about the men in their lives. Tell them, and tell them often how much you appreciate them!!

I hope that we can all have an attitude of thanks and love. My dad's heart attack a couple months ago I think opened some eyes in my family (which I am so grateful!!). This weekend, let us all remember the "important" things in life and let go of a little baggage. Hauling a refrigerator full of crap around on our backs as we go through life is no fun for anyone. Leave it behind... Forgive, love, and BE THANKFUL!!

PS- I am not tagging anyone, but if you would like to do it, consider yourself tagged!

Who is smarter? Toss up. It depends what the subject is...

Who does the laundry? Both of us, but since I don't work anymore, I am doing like 90%.

Who pays the bills? Him for sure!! I pay my phone bill which only gets paid every other month. That is why...

Invisible mother

A friend of mine sent me this email a couple days ago. (Thanks Ang!) I loved it and thought it appropriate to share with all my blog stalker friends!! I love you all so much and I hope this touches your heart like it did mine!! Sorry, it is a long one...

Invisible Mother......

It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm on the phone?' Obviously, not. No one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all. I'm invisible.

The invisible Mom. Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this? Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.'

I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated sum a cum laude - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going; she's going; she is gone!

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England .. Janice had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in. I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself. I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you this.'

It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe . I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription: 'To Charlotte , with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees.'

In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work: No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names. These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished. They made great sacrifices and expected no credit. The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.

A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it.' And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.' I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you, Charlotte. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become.'

At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride. I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on.

The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree. When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, 'My Mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for three hours and presses all the linens for the table.' That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, to add, 'you're gonna love it there.'

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women. Great Job, MOM!

Hope this encourages you when the going gets tough as it sometimes does. We never know what our finished products will turn out to be because of our perseverance.

TAGGED This one is pretty fun:)

I am really excited about my future.
I think I know everything. (working on this one)
I know everything. (oh wait, I am working on that...)
I want to go back to Europe. It has been too long...
I have an OCD with toilet paper rolls being on the right way and a bad addiction to Facebook.

I dislike gossip and trash talkers...
I miss the 80's...
I fear being my own biggest obstacle.
I hear our buddy Tim on our conference call. He is amazing.
I smell nothing. My nose is still stuffy...
I crave (this is x-rated, I cannot say...)
I cry for my children. Actually, I cry all the time. It is probably because I am making up for Travis's lack of tears...

I search out encouraging, empowering, and uplifting people.
I wonder if I am that for others.
I regret nothing. Everything in my life has made me what I am today, and I am pretty happy with that.

I wish to be a blessing to everyone I come in contact with.
I love to love people. I want to make a difference.
I hate negative, critical, and judgemental people.
I care about too many things to list.

I write too little. I think it is a lost art.
I win at everything I put my mind to...
I value time.
I listen to what I am taught by those who are where I want to be...
I don't want to be a wall flower at a party. I am the party.
I will be a difference maker.
I can be a bitch. (Especially if you are one if the ignorant women in RS)
I need 9 hours of sleep, or you get the bitch... (we have early church, hence above...)
I forget to pack sunglasses everytime I go out of town. I am always buying new ones.
I am happy pretty much all the time.

So, all things considered, this Halloween was a fun!! Alivia was peeved beyond belief at her costume, which made it really funny. I think the only thing she enjoyed was saying "woof woof." Dylan had a cold so, he only lasted trick-or-treating for about 45 minutes. That was just fine with me (and I think Trav was not complaining about coming home to relax)! When Dylan got home, he wanted to hand out candy with me. He tried to strike up lengthy conversations with every kid at our door (for those of you who know Dylan well, I am sure you are laughing at this). His favorite was to poll them as to what he should be next year... How do you explain to a 6 year old that no one really gives a rip about what he wants to be... they just want what they came for!! I want candy!!

Thanks to Papa Chad for being a good sport in his Pirate get-up! And thanks to Trav for complying with the many requests for the "Return of Nacho Libre." Always a hit!!!

ok, can someone please explain to me what has happened to this pumpkin?!? SICK! Can you see that it is oozing some sort of unexplainalbe substance?? Dylan carved this one at a party about 6 days before Halloween. I don't think you can tell, but the inside is coated with about 2 inches of black mold. Yes, I know... it is quite possibly the most disgusting thing ever! And for the record, it stained my porch...

Girls vs boys

So, I must admit that my little bundle of sweet brown sugar has caught me totally unawares. Because of her, I am experiencing a whole new world of motherhood that was never introduced to me with Dylan. Drawing on everything, throwing food (and I don't just mean onto the floor, I mean THROWING food- She has an arm!!), and tantrums... Oh, the tantrums. I don't understand how a 7 month old (yes, they started at 7 months) can figure out that she can drop herself to the ground and throw herself around like a fish out of water, screaming at a pitch unreachable to every other human being on the planet!! Other than it must somehow be programmed into her DNA. Or is it a female issue?? The fact remains, that they have gotten progressively worse with age... So, when she is laying on the grocery store floor, kicking, writhing, and screaming at the top of her very large lungs, what is a mother to do?? So far, my strategy has been to turn away and laugh so she can't see me laughing.

I am to the conclusion that God thinks I have some major improvements to make in the patience department. He cares more for our character than he does our comfort, right??

That being said, I am learning to pick my battles. I no longer fight her on the fact that she insists on eating dog food. Fine. I have learned to laugh at the fact that she is very consistent in taking off her shoes and socks every time she is in her car seat. Fine, it's even become comical. I have learned that just because things are "out of reach", that does not by any standard mean that she cannot get to them.

I am learning to let go a little... I am realizing how lucky I was with Dylan, who never got into anything, who never took a pen or pencil to my walls, and who very, very rarely throws a tantrum. I think God gave me an easy one as my first to trick me into having a second... Could this be??

Enjoying my little bundle of mishap... She may be a wild one, but she is so much fun.

TAG!! You're it!

Tag- Let's just see how quirky you are- Tell us about 5 unspectacular quirks of yours...

#1:My biggest quirk is that I hate when people put toilet paper on the holder backwards.

#2:I am totally OCD about how I fold towels, sheets, and Tshirts. If Travis folds them wrong, I will empty the closet to refold them when he is not home.

#3: I think I bathe like 2-3 times a day. I don't know why...

#4: I cannot stand water on the windshield if it's raining. My wipers are constantly going.

#5: I get really irritated if someone causes me to be late. I can't stand depending on other people. **That's the strange world of me :)

Alivia's 1st birthday

It seems so cliche to say that time goes by to quickly. But it is so true. Alivia's birthday crept up on me. I can not believe that it has been a year since she began blessing our lives. I think I almost had a breakdown when I realized that it had been an entire year. She has grown so much. It is hard for me now to remember the tiny 4lb little peanut that we first brought home. She gets more beautiful everyday. I know that I am definitely biased, but I think she is the most beautiful baby I have ever seen. Judge for yourselves... you can see the pictures.

Dylan singing

So, at a church service on Oct. 12, our amazing friend Tim pulled Dylan up on stage with him and his family to sing. He was in front of about 3,000 people. I guess you would have to understand this family to appreciate the magnitude of this. Dylan loves these guys, and looks up to them so very much!! They are like family to us. He has been levitating ever since!! It was a dream come true for him. He has asked me nearly everyday for almost 2 years if he could sing with them. (Goadies, we love you!!) Please check out their website if you get a chance!! http://www.thegoads.com/
They are some of the most amazing people you could ever ask to associate with!!

Free Enterprise Day 2008!!

Travis and I feel very fortunate to be able to celebrate America and our Free Enterprise system for an entire weekend once a year with our friends!! This year, we had a few of the most amazing WW2 veterans there to tell their stories. It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. I am amazed that men can carry such blind courage and do the things they did in such circumstances. I pray that we all realize that freedom isn't free and that many people paid, and many currently pay a huge price for us to enjoy what we have. I hope we may never forget that it is us as citizens that makes America great. We must learn not to rely on those we elect into office to take care of this country, but on ourselves. When we took our first steps to becoming independent, it was a group of 2% that signed our Declaration of Independence. We must never forget that an individual can make a difference. Let's not forget where we came from...

Crazy Crazy...

Ok, so these pictures are the culmination of about 2 hours that started out of boredom... but nothing can be boring for too long at our house. There are too many crazies around for quiet and stillness to reign for long. This moment is exactly what sisters are for.

To Hailey, I love you so very much. You are such an amazing girl... and I love that we share the same wacky and strange spirit. I really am so proud of you and I hope you always know that.

About Me

My photo
My life truly began on September 11, 1999. That is the day I married my amazing, champion husband, Travis. He is so perfect for me and I thank God for him everyday. We have been blessed with 2 beautiful children, Dylan, 5, and Alivia 1. They are the absolute joy in my life (next to Travis). I hope that everyday of my life each of them has no question that I love them. Words can never explain.
